John wrote a great article over at KSL.com concerning a few of the underrated performances of Philip Seymour Hoffman.
It’s so easy to look at Hoffman’s heavyweight films like “Capote,” “Doubt,” “The Master” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” and proclaim these the definitive Hoffman movies. But let’s face it, the guy was good in everything. Even if the movie wasn’t especially amazing, or if it was a Hollywood cash grab or if his role was just a side-note, Hoffman was always, always good.
Like everyone else on the internet who writes about or cares about film, I share in believing a reality without Hoffman is a pretty sucky one. If I had anything to add to John’s article, it’s only that “The Big Lebowski” and “Magnolia” are films that could have easily made the list. These are films people don’t necessarily think of Hoffman for, but when you sit down to watch them, you know the project was better off for his performance.
