I get grief sometimes for how hard I’ve been on Pixar lately. But when the company that brought us “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” “A Bugs Life,” and “Up” announces they’re excited to begin work on “Toy Story 4,” I have to sigh a little. No, no, don’t get me wrong. I want to see “Incredibles 2,” and “Finding Dory,” and whatever sequel they have loaded in their pipeline these days, but I miss pre-Disney Pixar.
But then I see a trailer like the latest for “Inside Out,” and I think, they’re still in there. They may have to cash in all “Cars 2” style from time-to-time, but 2015 proves they haven’t dumped all their resources into that Disney assembly line.
If the below trailer is anything to go off of, Pixar has once again found a fun and approachable way to discuss heavier issues. If they truly have found that balance, if they’re actually going to touch on childhood depression, and if they are able to do it without making it a terrible after school special, then I’ll keep buying their sequels. As long as every couple years we get an “Inside Out” and a “Good Dinosaur,” then I’m happy to also pay for “Monsters Old Folks Home” or “Finding Bruce.”
