CANDLE ON THE WATER — Disney fans are getting their first peek at a very different take on a childhood favorite with the recent trailer release for “Pete’s Dragon.”
The live action/animation hybrid musical from 1977 is getting a makeover from director David Lowery who is best known for 2013’s “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.” In the first trailer, which hit the web Sunday night, Pete has been living away from civilization for 6 years and, as Disney fans are already aware, he hasn’t been alone.
A quick look at IMDB shows several characters from the original are missing in action and nothing about the new trailer suggest characters will be breaking out into song at any point, but fans don’t seem too worried about the changes.
Lowery’s updated take on Pete and his animated dragon friend Elliott stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban and Oakes Fegley as Pete. It is slated to be released August 12, 2016.
